ERNEST KOESTER, of Hackensack, N. J., Prosecutor of the Pleas for
Bergen County, was born at Norristown, Pa., April 28, 1858, the son of G. F.
and Mary B. Koester. He attended the excellent schools of that place and
afterward the High School in Philadelphia. He then went to Germany and
studied three years in Heidelberg University. and on returning to his native
State entered Allegheny College at Meadville, from which he was graduated
A.B. in 1876, receiving the A.M. degree in course in 1879. He studied law
at Meadville, was admitted to the bar of Pennsylvania August 17, 1881, and
was elected District Attorney for McKean County, Pa., on the Republican
ticket in 1884. After the expiration of his official terns (January 1, 1888) he
practiced law in McKean and adjacent counties until 1894, when he came to
Hackensack, N. J., where he at once entered upon the work. of his profession
throughout Bergen County and soon secured a lucrative practice. He was
admitted to the New Jersey bar at Trenton June 6, 1895.
On coming to Bergen County Mr. Koester immediately took an active interest in Republican politics and soon became one of the most prominent leaders of his party. While his political convictions and partisan action are consistent there is nothing of what is called bitter partisanship in his make-up. He is one of the ablest lawyers and most respected citizens of the community. In February, 1900, Governor Voorhees appointed him Prosecutor of the Pleas for Bergen County for the usual term from March follow- ing. Mr. Koester's high standing in his profession and his qualifications for the prosecutorship are unquestioned. He was not inexperienced in the duties of that office, and his effort to make the administration of justice by the courts in Bergen County impartial, efficient, and economical is noteworthy. He is married and has two children.
