ISAAC L. NEWBERY

ISAAC L. NEWBERY, of Arlington, is the son of Joseph H. Newbery
and Emily Ann Rockefellow Sharp, daughter of Matthias and Catherine
(Willet) Sharp, and a grandson of William Newbery, all natives of England. His father, Joseph H. Newbery, came front London in early life,
settling in New York City, and there successfully carried on business as
a hatter until his death in 1865. His wife died in 1866.
Mr. Newbery was born in New York City on the 27th of August, 1854, and there received an excellent public school education, graduating in 1867 from Grammar School No. 32. In the same year lie engaged in the custom house brokerage business, in which he has ever since continued, achieving marked success and gaining a wide reputation. He moved to Arlington, Hudson County, in 1881, and in that attractive suburb has erected a beautiful home which he now occupies. Although Mr. Newbery has devoted himself assiduously to his business interests he has been active in public affairs, and since to king up his residence in Arlington has become prominent ill various important capacities. A Republican in politics, he was a member of the Township Committee in 1885, 18S6, 1896, and 1897, serving in 1896 as Chairman of that body. He is President of the Kearny Building and Loan Association, having held that position during the last nine years. This is one of the largest and strongest corporations of the kind in Eastern New Jersey, and under Mr. Newbery's able and energetic management has made an excellent record. Mr. Newbery is an honorary member of Company G, N. G. N. J., a member and Past Master of Triune Lodge, A. F. and A. M., and a member and Past Regent in the Royal Arcanum. In 1882 he organized the Society of Foresters in Arlington, of which he is Past Chief Ranger. He is also Past Grand of Pilgrim Lodge, I. O. O. F., and has long been a member of the Volunteer Fire Department of Kearny, which he first served as Foreman and Assistant Chief for two years each. In these various capacities as well as in all business relations Mr. Newbery has displayed marked ability, sound judgment, and great enterprise. As a citizen he is highly esteemed and respected. He is thoroughly identified with the affairs of his adopted town and county, active and influential in promoting every worthy object, and thoroughly interested in all movements which promote the general welfare. Mr. Newbery married Jennie Sinclair, and their children are Agnes L. (wife of H. L. Frazee), William A., Arthur N., Jennie S., Isaac L. (deceased), Joseph H. (deceased), and Emily S.
