CHARLES A. SCHINDLER, Sr., son of Christian Henry Schindler and
Catherine Keller, was born July 5, 1827, in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany,
where his father, who died in 1539, was a prominent furniture manufacturer and upholsterer. He was educated and learned the trade of upholstering and decorating in the Fatherland. In 1848 he took part in the revolution, and in consequence was obliged to flee to America, in company with
many other fellow patriots, and here he was extensively engaged in manufacturing furniture and upholstering in New York City until 1870. In
that year he moved his business to West Hoboken, N. J., where he has
resided since 1561).
Mr. Schindler is one of the oldest and most esteemed German citizens in North Hudson County, a man of the loftiest integrity, and in every relation of life has gained the confidence as well as the respect of the community. In politics he is a Republican from conviction, especially on National issues, but in local affairs he is independent, casting his influence in favor of matters promising the greatest good. He is a prominent member of the Patriots' Society of 1848 and '49 of New York. In May, 1852, he married Sophia Ziegeler, daughter of Daniel Ziegeler, of Hamburg, Germany. She died in October, 1898. Of their ten children six are living, viz.: Charles, Jr., Cora, Sophia, Otto, Thekla, and Rose.
