JOHN HENRY MACDONALD

JOHN HENRY MACDONALD has been a life-long resident of Bayonne,
N.J., where he was born on the 15th of February, 1844. He is the son of
John Macdonald and Hanna Everson, and a great-grandson on his mother's
side of a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His parents were both born and
married in Hudson County, N. J., where the Macdonalds and Eversons
have resided for many years.
Mr. Macdonald attended the Bayonne public schools, acquired an excellent rudimentary education, and then engaged in the oyster business in his native town. Afterward ire became lighthouse keeper at Bergen Point, N. J., under President Lincoln. He enlisted in 1861 and served nine months in Company C, Twenty-first New Jersey Volunteers, participating in the battles of Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and other engagements, and being honorably discharged from the service in 1862. Mr. Macdonald is now the proprietor of the Riverside House in Bayonne, and is one of the most popular citizens of Southern Hudson County. He is patriotic, public spirited, and progressive, active in the interests of the community, influential in promoting local prosperity, and respected and esteemed by all who know him. In politics he is a Republican, and in religion a Methodist. He is a member of Van Houten Post, Grand Army of the Republic, of Jersey City, and prominently identified with other important organizations and enterprises in his native county. He was married on the 24th of December!, 1865, to Ann L. Barnes, daughter of Stephen D. and Judith Barnes, of Port Richmond, Staten Island, N. Y. They have three children: John S., Emma J., and Charles W.
