WILLIAM T. HOWE

WILLIAM T. HOWE, a well known coal merchant of Kearny, N. J., is
the son of John Howe and Esther Jane Somerville and a grandson of William
and Margaret (Pollock) Howe. His ancestors on both sides came to
this country from Ireland. He was born in Harrison. Hudson County, on
the 19th of June, 1854, and there received his education. Afterward he
was for twenty-three years a bookkeeper for different concerns and in that
capacity gained a broad and practical knowledge of business affairs. In
1894 he engaged in the coal, ice, and wood business in Kearny, and has
since built up a large and successful trade in that line.
Mr. Howe was for some time a member of the First Infantry Regiment, New Jersey State Militia, receiving an honorable discharge. He is a Prohibitionist in politics and is now serving as a Justice of the Peace. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, of the Temple of Honor, of the United Order of the Golden Cross, of the New Jersey Coal Dealers' Association, and of the Presbyterian Church, and was one of the founders and for many years an enthusiastic member of the Kearny Fire Department. Mr. Howe married Mattie D. Wilbur, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Doty) Wilbur, and has five children: Ida Somerville, Essie J., George T., Clarence D., and Charles W.
