GUSTAV W. SCHOLP

GUSTAV W. SCHOLP, ex-Mayor of North Bergen, Hudson County, is
one of the most progressive and popular citizens of that community, of which
he has been a resident since 1881. He is a Democrat, and has been one of
the active leaders of the party and prominent in local affairs. He was a
candidate for Township Committeeman in 1892, but was unsuccessful in the
convention. He was elected a member of the Board of Education of North
Bergen in 1894, became clerk of the board, and, having subsequently been
re-elected for another term, was made President of the Board of Education
by his colleagues. In 1896 he received the Democratic nomination as Township
Committeeman, defeating in the convention the gentleman by whom he
had himself been defeated in 1892. His election to the committee followed.
Mr. Scholp was elected to the office of Mayor at the end of a contest which
demonstrated his popularity. defeating Charles Pinnell, who had held the
office for more than twenty years. Mr. Scholp was born in the City of New York, March 31, 1861, and is the son of Charles Scholp and Mary, daughter of Henry Barringer. He is of German descent. Up to the age of fourteen he attended the public schools of New York City. During the next six years he mastered every branch of the art of glass engraving, being in the employ of William Van Hofe, of 33 Murray Street, New York. During the next fifteen years, however, he was engaged as a salesman with W. M. Schwenker, of New York, dealer in brewers' supplies. He is now successfully engaged in business for himself in the same line. Mr. Scholp married Sophie Lehnig, December 2, 1883, and owns the handsome home in which he resides on Hudson Boulevard, North Bergen. He is President of the Merry Owl Association, Past Master of Mystic Tie Lodge, F. and A. M.. and a member of the Elks of Waterbury, Conn., and of Hoffman Lodge of Union Hill, Hudson County, N. J.
