CHARLES C. HENDRICK, M.D., one of the rising young physicians of
Jersey City and since 1895 Medical Health Inspector of Hudson County,
was born in Phillipsburg, N. J., on the 5th of February, 1871. His father,
Christopher Hendrick, was the first engineer to construct and run an engine
in Mexico, and for some time was head engineer for the Emperor Maximilian.
His paternal grandfather, Thomas A. Hendrick, came to this country
from Ireland in 1845, and was a close friend of the late Hon. Thomas A.
Hendricks. Vice-President of the United States. There are still in the family
many interesting letters written by the latter to the former. Dr. Hendrick's
mother was Julia Murphy, a daughter of Michael and Bridget (Dunlavey)
Murphy, both natives of Ireland. His paternal grandfather's wife
was Mary Dunlavey.
Hendrick was educated at St. Bonaventure College in Allegany, N.Y., at St. Canisius College in Buffalo, N. Y., and at Seton Hall in Orange, N. J., where lie was graduated A.B. in 1811. The same college conferred upon hint the degree of A.M. in 1893. Subsequently he took up the study of medicine and was graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City, receiving his degree of M.D. March 26, 1894. Afterward he also studied law and was admitted as an attorney in New Jersey in November, 1897. Entering upon the practice of medicine in Jersey City, Dr. Hendrick soon gained distinction and was called upon to fill various positions of trust and responsibility. Since July, 1895, he has served as Medical Health Inspector of Hudson County, a position for which he is well qualified and in which he has rendered most satisfactory service. In 1898 lie went to Cuba as an Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army and there broadened an already wide and practical experience in both medicine and sanitation. He is one of the ablest sanitary experts in Eastern New Jersey, and though a comparatively young man has already achieved a high position among the leading physicians of Hudson County.
