JAMES F. GAVEGAN, foreman of the shipping department of the Standard Oil Company at Bayonne, N. J., was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., November 6, 1870. His parents, John Gavegan and Cecelia Rush, natives of Ireland, came to the United States when young. They were married in Brooklyn, and finally moved from there to Bayonne, N. J.

Mr. Gavegan was educated in the public schools of both Brooklyn and Bayonne, and upon completing his studies associated himself with the Standard Oil Company, with which he has since remained. He now holds the responsible position of foreman of their shipping department. He is an ardent and active Democrat, a public spirited and patriotic citizen, and for two terms has served Bayonne as a member of the Board of School Trustees. He is a member of the Foresters of America, of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and of the Catholic Club.
