LOUIS KIESEWETTER

LOUIS KIESEWETTER, of Secaucus, N. J., is one of the active leaders
of the Democratic party in Hudson County. His first vote was cast for
General George P. McClelland, the Democratic candidate for President of
the United States in 1864, and he has been a consistent Democrat from that
time to the present. He was a Freeholder of Hudson County in 1879 and
1880. He has been a niember of the Democratic County Committee of Hudson
County for many
years, and is Chairman
of the Democratic Executive Committee of Secaucus.
Mr. Kiesewetter was born in Germany, October 8, 1845, the son of August and Caroline Kiesewetter. In 1846 he was brought to America by his parents. The family settled originally at Greenville, Jersey City, subsequently residing in Hoboken, where August Kiesewetter died in 1883. Mr. Kiesewetter's mother still resides there. He was educated in the public schools of Hoboken, subsequently learning the trade of a butcher, which he has followed since. In 1870 he engaged in business on his own account in Hoboken. Since 1880 he has been a resident of Secaucus. In addition to his regular business he has also speculated largely and successfully in real estate. In the Civil War he served in the Union Army, enlisting in 1862 in Colonel Howard's Marine Artillery. He was subsequently transferred to the Ninety-eighth Regiment, New York Volunteers, with which he served two years and two months. He then entered the Quartermaster's Department and was transferred to Folly Island. He participated in the bombardment of Fort Sumter and in various other engagements. and in 1864 was mustered out of the service. He is a, member of the Knights of Honor, the Ancient Order of Redmen, and the O. D. H. F. Benevolent Society. He married Francesca Bornawetz, of Hoboken, by whom he has five children, who are living: Ernest, Frank, Otto, Carrie, and Louis.
