JOHN WHITE

JOHN WHITE has been a life-long resident of North Hudson County, N.
J., having been born in the Town of Union on the 22d of January, 1849.
His parents, Michael White and Mary McGrane, natives of Ireland, were
married in that country and came to the United States in 1848. They took
up their residence on Union Hill, where Mrs. White still lives. Michael White died there in 1863, respected and esteemed for those manly virtues
which characterized all his relations. Mr. White obtained a good public school education in the Town of Union, and as a youth developed strong intellectual and physical qualities. Learning the carpenter's trade, he engaged in business for himself about 1878 as a contractor and builder, and since then has continued in that occupation with signal success. On Union Hill and in West Hoboken, where he now resides, he has contributed to the general growth and prosperity, and many of the finest dwellings and other buildings are the result of his energies. He has built up an extensive business. His ability and enterprise, his integrity and sound judgment, and his sagacity and foresight have won for him a wide popularity, and the respect and confidence of the entire community. He is one of the prominent citizens of North Hudson County, and from boyhood has been active and influential in behalf of the best interests of the public. In politics Mr. White is a Democrat, and at different times has served as Commissioner of Assessments. For three years he was a member of Company B, Fourth Regiment, N. G. N. J. He is a leading member of the Holy Name Society of St. Michael's Monastery, of West Hoboken, and has been identified with other important social bodies. Mr. White was married in July, 1881, to Miss Jane Hogan, daughter of John Hogan. of Jersey City Heights, N. J. They have six children: Mary, Jennie, Nellie, James, Joseph, and Addie.
