BARTHOLOMEW FITZGERALD, of West Hoboken, Hudson County,
N. J., is now living in retirement from active business life after a successful
and honorable career. He is recognized as one of the most substantial and
influential citizens in the community. A Democrat in politics, he is a leader
in that party. Both in his business career and in his political activities he
has always exhibited sound judgment, based upon keen observation of men
and things, and has never failed to manifest the courage of his convictions.
His personal, business, and political integrity has never been questioned.
For six years he held the responsible position of a member and Chairman of
the Common Council of West Hoboken, and in this office of trust showed a
determination to carefully look out for the best interests of the community.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born near Killeagh, County Cork, Ireland, May 14, 1842, the son of John and Mary Fitzgerald. He is a descendant of the famous Fitzgerald family which for many centuries has occupied so prominent and patriotic a place in the history of Ireland and of her struggles against oppression. The Fitzgeralds were of Norman descent, but, having become established in Ireland, they intermarried with the Irish nobility, and so completely made the cause of Ireland their own that it became a proverb that the Fitzgeralds were more Irish than the Irish themselves. Mr. Fitzgerald inherited many of the sterling qualities of his ancestors. He was educated in the schools near his birthplace, and in 1862 came to America. During a year or more after his arrival in this country he re sided in New York City, but since 1863 he has been a resident of Hudson County, N. J. He engaged in business as a builder and contractor, both in New York City and Hudson County, and for many years conducted a very successful business. He accumulated a fortune. He married Mary E. Gilligan, by whom he has seven children: Dr. Thomas Fitzgerald, a physician in Jersey City; Henry Fitzgerald, who is engaged in the marble business; and Mollie. John, Morris, Fannie, and Florence Fitzgerald.
