GEORGE RIESENBERGER

GEORGE RIESENBERGER, proprietor of one of the best known hotels
on the Hudson County Boulevard, was born in Rosendale, Ulster County,
N. Y., on Christmas Day, December 25, 1851. His parents, Nicholas Riesenberger
and Catherine Blatz, came from Germany to this country about 1843,
settling in Ulster County, where the former was employed as foreman of a
large cement factory. About 1859 the family moved to the Town of Union.
N. J., and here, on what
is now the Hudson County Boulevard, Nicholas
Riesenberger was for
thirty-five years a leading florist. He was a
prominent, public spirited citizen, an active
member of the old
"Wide Awakes," and a
man universally respected and esteemed.
He died in 1895. George Riesenberger was educated in the public schools of the Town of Union, whither his parents removed when he was eight years old. Reared in the florist's business, it was only natural that he should first adopt it as a vocation, and for some time he was actively associated with his father. Later he conducted with his brother William a floral establishment in New York City for about ten years. Then he engaged in cigar manufacturing in the Town of Union. and subsequently was cashier in the famous Eldorado and at the Guttenberg racetrack for about two years. For a time he also conducted a popular hotel and park resort at the Forty-second Street ferry in Weehawken. In August, 1895, Mr. Riesenberger became proprietor of his present hotel on the Hudson County Boulevard, corner of Towerhill, West New York. He has also been prominent in public affairs. In 1876 he became a Constable and Court Officer, and served in that capacity about five years. While in business in New York he was also, for about five years, Sergeant of Police in the Town of Union, resigning on account of other pressing interests. He has frequently served on juries. including the Grand Jury. and organized in the Town of Union the first Court of Foresters in North Hudson. This was Court Palisade, No. 7,646. He is a member of Court Stevens, Foresters of America, of Hoboken, and of the Einigkeit Singing Society, and for several years was an active member of the Union Hill Fire Department. He is also a member of the Palisade Fishing Club of the Town of Union, of which he was President for ten years. Mr. Riesenberger is a public spirited citizen and deeply interested in all movements affecting his town and county. He comes from a distinguished family, his father being noted as a man of unusual mental attainments, and his youngest brother, Adam, having been a professor in Stevens Institute, Hoboken, for over seventeen years. Mr. Riesenberger married Emma Hoffman, daughter of Charles Frederick Hoffman, and of their seven children four are living, namely: Nicholas, William, Minnie, and Carrie.
