GARRET D. VAN REIPEN

GARRET D. VAN REIPEN was born in the old Bergen district of Jersey
City, N. J., January 26, 1826, and was descended front Garret Van
Reipen, one of the early Dutch settlers of Communipaw, who came to this
country about 1654.
In 1856 Mr. Van Reipen was elected Mayor of Hudson City, now a part of Jersey City. At the outbreak of the Civil War he volunteered, was made a Lieutenant of Company A, Second Regiment, and was afterward promoted to a Captaincy for bravery in the field. When the Fourth Regiment, N. G. N. J., was organized he was made its Paymaster. In 1863 he was again made Mayor of Hudson City, and was re-elected biennially until 1871, when Bergen and Hudson City were consolidated with Jersey City. He was also one of the founders of the Hudson City Savings Bank, and was its Treasurer from 1866 until 1870, when he became President and Treasurer, which positions he held up to his death. In 1863-4 Mr. Van Reipen was a member of the Legislature, and in 1874-5 he was a member of the Jersey City Board of Finance. He was President of the County Board for the Equalization of Taxes from its organization, in 1873, having been re-elected every year through all its other changes of membership. He was also a Director of the Hudson County National Bank for many years. He was a Democrat. He died August 1, 1899. and is survived by a widow and one daughter.
