EUGENE HOLDEN GOLDBERG, M.D., was born in Newark, N. J.,
October 4, 1868. He is the son of Eugene S. Goldberg and Sarah Caroline
Ward, daughter of Stephen Nye Ward, of Morris County, N. J. The Doctor's
mother, Sarah Caroline Goldberg, was born at Madison, N. J., April
12, 1844, and died at Harrison. N. J., November 22, 1896. She was a kind,
true, Christian friend and a charitable and loving mother.
Dr. Goldberg received his preliminary education at Afton, Morris County,
and in the schools of Harrison and Kearny, Hudson County, and afterward pursued a college preparatory course at the Newark Military Academy
in Newark, N. J. He was graduated with the degree of Doctor of
Medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, in June,
1889, and subsequently served three months on the staff of Bellevue Hospital in that city. Later he was for one and one-half years resident physician
and surgeon respectively at the City Hospital, Newark, and at the
end of that period (October, 1891) engaged in the active practice of his
profession at his present location, 18 Kearny Avenue, Kearny, Hudson
County. He resides on the corner of Kearny and Bergen Avenues. He
has acquired a large and successful practice and stands high in the esteem
and confidence of the community. In both public and professional life Dr. Goldberg has achieved an eminent reputation. He was First Lieutenant and Assistant Surgeon of the Third Battalion, N. G. N. J., of Orange, in 1892 and 1893, and was appointed Treasurer of the Town of Kearny in 1896 and 1897. In 1898 he was elected a member of the Kearny Board of Aldermen by the largest majority in the town's history. Dr. Goldberg is a Methodist in religion, and a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Improved Order of Heptasophs, the Daughters of Liberty, the Royal Arcanum, the Junior Order United American Mechanics, the Foresters of America, and the Widows' and Orphans' Society of Medical Men of New Jersey. In every capacity he has displayed marked ability, great public spirit, and sound judgment. On June 10, 1891, he was married to Miss Bessie Burtis, daughter of Barnet Burtis, of Kearny, N. J., by whom he has three children: Eleanore Hughson. born May 23, 1893; Burtis Eugene, born May 23, 1894; and Karolyn Christine, born May 13, 1898.
