PETER STILLWELL

PETER STILLWELL, of Bayonne, was born at White House, Hunterdon
County, N. J., August-22,1863. He is the son of George Stillwell and
Catharine Schomp, a grandson of John V. Stillwell and Peter Schomp, a
great-grandson of Nicholas Stillwell and Peter Schomp, Sr., and a great-great-grandson of Richard Stillwell and John Schomp, who was a son of
Peter Schomp. Richard Stillwell was the son of Nicholas Stillwell, who
was the son of Jeremiah Stillwell, who was the son of Nicholas Stillwell,
who was the first of the name in this country, emigrating from Holland in
1638 and settling on Manhattan Island. In England Nicholas Stillwell's
name was Nicholas Cooke. He was driven from the country by persecutions
during the reign of Charles I. and went to Holland, whence he came
to America. Richard Stillwell, the great-great-grandfather of the subject
of this sketch, was a Captain in the Fourth Regiment, Hunterdon County,
New Jersey State troops, during the Revolutionary War.
Peter Stillwell was graduated from Rutgers College with the degree of B. A. in 1886, and two years later was admitted to the bar of Colorado. In 1889 he was admitted to the New Jersey bar, and since then has practiced in Bayonne. He was a member of the Bayonne Board of Education for four years, serving two terns as President of the board. He is a member of the Royal Arcanum, a public spirited citizen, and honored and respected by all who know him. He was married, May 9, 1894, to Henrietta A. Helmke, and has three children: William Howard, Bernardine Rose, and Catharine Louise.
