JOHN ROBERT MICHEL, eldest son of George and Barbara Elizabeth
(Fielder) Michel, was born February 8, 1873, in the Town of Union, N. J.,
where he has always resided. He received his education in the public
schools of that town and at Hasbrouck Institute in Jersey City, and then
entered the drug store of William Falkner, Fifty-second Street and Eighth
Avenue, New York, where he remained about three years. His experience
in this capacity has
served him well in subsequent business affairs.
Having graduated from
Hasbrouck Institute in
June, 1894, he began active life with a good
classical training, and as
a drug clerk supplemented his studies by a
practical knowledge of
commercial matters. On
resigning his position in
the store he succeeded
his father in the liquor
business at 215 Palisade
Avenue, corner of Humboldt Street, in the Town
of Union, which he has
since conducted. During the past eight years Mr. Michel has taken an active part in local politics, being the organizer and standard bearer of the B. J. Michel Association of the Town of Union, and having served three years as a member of the Democratic Town General Committee. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the New Democratic Club of Union Hill and of the Second Ward Democratic Club, which he helped to organize in 1896, and of which he has been the only Treasurer. He is a member, also, of the Charles Bauer Association and of Wahwequa Tribe, No. 183, Independent Order of Redmen. Mr. Michel is perhaps better known by the came of "Bob" Michel, or as "B. J." Michel, the name borne by the association of which he is a founder and Treasurer. He was married, June 9, 1896, to Lillie, daughter of Henry and Meta Fisher, of Jersey City Heights, N. J. They have one child, Lillie Barbara Michel.
