HobokenIt is one of Hudson’s little secrets hidden in a cellar, steps from the Erie Lackawanna Terminal on Hudson Street. You could easily walk right past and think it was
any other bucket’o blood and Hoboken is studded with them like a ham with cloves. But inside, downstairs, when Big Ed is holding sway with his Blues Jam, you can’t walk
past.
That would be “Big Ed” Sullivan. Every Monday night for the last nine years Ed has been putting together a Blues Jam inviting musicians from all over to join in with he and
his band in a free form session that goes from 9:30 to whenever. Forrest Gump would say “It’s like a box of chawchlats. You never know what you’re gonna git.” And that
is a big part of the appeal. You know that you are going to get hardcore blues all night.
You know that you are going to get a real unpretentious relaxed if a touch on the dive-y side, atmosphere. Real casual and that is a good thing. You know that you are
going to get reasonably priced drinks in a very friendly atmosphere. You are going to get a big, genuine smile from Christine Santelli behind the bar, and friendly service.
Christine has been settin’ em up at Scotland Yard for 11 years, and, of course, she has her own band; check out her Web Site at www.ChristineSantelli.com
You know that you are going to get Big Ed and his sidemen. You will get a great entertainment bargain, no cover no minimum.
And one other thing you will get: You know you will have a good time. There are not that many places that can be said for and this truly is one of the good ones.
The music varies as widely as the musicians who show up. Big Ed puts their name on a black board or they sign in when they arrive and everybody plays in endless
permutations of different players, always Blues. Ed Mcs and introduces the players as they rotate and the experience is the acoustic equivalent of looking through a
kaleidoscope.
Ed Keeps the Blues going. Christine keeps the booze flowing. Les Bons Temp Roulez… Every Monday you will find big Ed. But there is a different program most every night
of the week, you will find something. Just check the website www.scotlandyardbar.com if you must know. Scotland yard is at 72 Hudson Street in Hoboken, (201)
222-9273.
