"Moscow on the Hudson" with Celebrated Russian Sculptor Plans for a world-class monument to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were unveiled during the city's ceremonies marking the second anniversary of the fateful day. Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, who was joined by world renowned sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, unveiled a replica of what will be the city's permanent "September 11th Memorial." The actual monument, which officials expect to draw thousands paying tribute annually, will be thefirst national memorial to all victims, including the 1993 WTC bombing. Sculpted in bronze, the statue – which is currently being built by the artist in Russia – will stand about 90 feet high and will feature a large crystal teardrop in the center that will constantly recycle water in a crying motion. At the same time it will reflect the Lower Manhattan skyline, which is directly. across from the Jersey City waterfront. "Jersey City was so close to the devastation of that day, both in proximity and in grief that was felt," Cunningham said. "It has been our goal to establish a monument that would not only honor all those who were lost, but also become a national destination where all would want to stop and reflect. The sculpture, which was accepted by Cunningham and members of the Jersey City 9-11 Memorial Committee, will be funded by the Russian Federation. It was one of dozens of proposals submitted to the 9-11 Memorial Committee during the last two years for a permanent memorial. "One of our greatest national monuments was also a gift.' Mayor Cunningham said, pointing to Lady Liberty. "The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French and is one of our most treasured sites.' Tsereteli is an esteemed sculptor and president of the Russian Academy of Art, as well as a Good Will Ambassador for UNESCO. His works are on display across the globe, including a permanent piece at the United Nations in New York.
