Newport recently unveiled Robert Pfitzenmeier’s Pavonia Arcs. This dramatic sculpture sits atop a pedestal in the plaza on Washington Boulevard, near the corner of Pavonia Avenue, and is prominently visible from all directions in the area, and from as far away as the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. Mr. Pfitzenmeier has been working as a sculptor for more than twenty-five years, and has taught at Parsons School of Design. His work has been commissioned for many public and private sectors, ranging in scope and scale from outdoor pieces to complex interior suspended installations. “The inspiration for Newport’s Pavonia Arcs lies in the wind and on the water,” says Mr. Pfitzenmeier. “The proximity to the River and all the marine activity here brought me to a concept derivative of sailing. The curves echo the billowing sails of the wind-powered vessels, a wind that is very active in this location. The sculpture’s nine colored panels swing and flutter from their vertical resting position in response to the wind.” The panels are made of a stainless steel, covered with sheets of anodized zirconium that yield a full spectrum of colors. Pavonia Arcs has shades of gold, red, blue, and purple. The sculpture stands 25 feet – nine feet of concrete pedestal, and 16 feet of stainless steel structure. “Newport has been pleased to add artistic pieces of interest at regular intervals along the Waterfront Walkway, such as The Lighthouse, The Propeller, the Town Square Monoliths and The Obelisk,” says Newport’s Marketing Director, Jennifer Caluri. “We look forward to the public enjoying and being inspired by Pavonia Arcs.” More art works are planned for Newport as the development continues to grow. |
