The Loew's Jersey Theatre Presents A Mini-Marathon of Action-Adventure Movies on Saturday, Jan. 29: 2:30 PM The Thief of Bagdad Starring Sabu, Conrad Veidt, John Justin, June Duprez, Rex Ingram. Directed by Michael Powell, Tim Whelan, and others. (1940, 120 minutes) This Technicolor Arabian Nights extravaganza is widely regarded as one of the best fantasy-action films (if not the best) of the pre-computer technology era. The title character, Abu, befriends a ragged young man named Ahmed, who happens to be the rightful prince of Bagdad. The prince has been usurped by his evil vizier Jaffar, who hopes to expand his power by marrying the lovely princess of Basra. But the princess is in love with Ahmed, and so he and Abu set out to save her from Jaffer's evil machinations and to reclaim his rightful throne. Along the way there are life-size mechanical toys, evil spells, a flying carpet and a gigantic, bombastic genie. All of this is filmed with what, was for the era, was dazzling special effects and eye-popping color. 6:30 PM The Adventures of Robin Hood Starring Errol Flynn; Olivia de Havilland, Claude Rains, Basil Rathbone. Directed by Michael Curtiz (1938, 102 minutes) The Adventures of Robin Hood is one of the screen's greatest adventure films, cementing Errol Flynn's reputation as his generation's action screen idol and set a standard for the genre that inspired modern blockbusters such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. This film ties together various ancient legends with a storyline that has Robin as a knight turned outlaw to defend the peasants and throne of England against the evil machinations of Prince John, who is scheming to depose his brother, Richard the Lionheart, while the King is away. There are several terrific action sequences, culminating in the climatic sword fight between Flynn and Basil Rathbone. 8:45 PM Raiders of the Lost Ark Starring Harrison Ford, Karen Allen; Directed by Steven Spielberg; Produced by George Lucas (1981, 115 minutes) An homage to the glory days of matinee adventure serials, big-budget action epics and back-lot B-movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the most enjoyable cinematic events of the 1980s - or any era. Indian Jones is a not-so-mild-mannered archeology professor who has a history of finding himself on great adventure - and in great danger - trying to find and secure lost artifacts before they wind up in the wrong hands. Here our hero finds himself on the trail of the Ark of the Covenant, chasing and being chased by - many evil things in league with one of Indy's archrivals. Making matters even more interesting, Indy must work with an old girlfriend with not-too-fond memories of him. One of the most ingenious and stylish action films ever made, and packed with breakneck action, a cheerfully absurd plot, exotic locales, and a bit of romance, Raiders has become an instant classic. Admission for each screening is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and children 12 years old and younger.
Combo ticket for 2 screenings costs $10 for adults, $6 for seniors & children. Super-combo ticket for all 3 screenings costs $15 for adults, $10 for seniors & children. You will get a FREE popcorn with the purchase of each super combo ticket.
