This will ring a bell

GAVIN RAMPLING August 11 2005

'The meanings in this country of gender, ethnicity and labour, they're constantly shifting under people's feet. We're in as dire a conflict politically and socially as we were a hundred years ago."

Sat outside New Jersey's City Hall, a six-minute train journey from an eye-level view of Ground Zero, Adriano Shaplin surveys his surroundings. The 26-year-old playwright and artistic director of The Riot Group, is voluble com-pany and enjoys his current neighbourhood. It's cheap. There's the implied frisson of organised crime. And there's a tectonic tension of countless identities struggling to establish themselves.

"You get a block like this, frozen in time," he says, indicating the area around the nineteenth-century City Hall, "and yet they're knocking down buildings over the street, trying to move new businesses in. There's a wine bar for stockbrokers right next to a hair salon that only serves African-Americans. In that bodega over there you have to order in Spanish. It's totally crazy and it's something I'm trying to capture in the play."
