A complete city in itself, Trenton does not blossom and wilt with the
coming and going of the legislators. The hotels are filled, of course, when
the session opens each January; but in New Jersey the legislature holds sessions on Monday nights, rather than through each week. This arrangement makes it possible for the legislators to commute from their homes,
and at the same time deprives the city of the opportunity of being the
politico-social center of the State, as are some other State capitals.
In January of every year divisible by three Trenton is decked with flags and crowded with visitors for the inaugural ceremonies. The War Memorial Building, where the Governor takes the oath, is packed to the limit of
its 2,000 seats. The ceremony is preceded by a procession of officers and is
followed by a huge parade through the streets. An executive salute of 19
guns precedes the delivery of the Great Seal of the State to the Governor.
An afternoon reception in the executive offices is followed by an elaborate
ball in the evening. Formerly inaugurations took place in the Taylor Opera
House with much less ceremony.
