BOTTLE HILL TAVERN (L), 12.6 miles, a white, two-story frame building with attic and porch, was built in 1812 on the site of an older inn of the same name. The story runs that the first proprietor, David Brant, lacking a sign for his hostelry, hung a bottle on a string and stretched it out over the road as a reminder to travelers. It was the post house for the Elizabeth- Morristown coach run, and in 1825 the Marquis de Lafayette was entertained here. The tavern has been preserved by the Madison Historical Society.
