LONG VALLEY, 35.5 miles (540 alt., 500 pop.), settled by Germans at the turn of the 28th century, was known as German Valley for more than 200 years; after the United States entered the World War, the name was changed. It is a tightly built little village in the center of a dairy- and truck-farming section. LONG VALLEY INN (L), built in 1787, has served truck-farming section. The frame two-story building, remodeled in 1922, was known before the World War the German Valley Hotel. Although lacking proof, the present proprietor is of the opinion that George Washington had a drink or two at the inn. Left is the OLD FORD HOUSE (private), built, according to an ancient tablet on the front, in 1774 by P. H. Wise, a German settler. It is a two-story frame structure of 12 rooms.
