SOUTH MOUNTAIN RESERVATION, an all-year playground, spreads over the ridge
immediately north of Millburn. More than 2,000 verdant acres, mostly in their natural state, stretch across hills and dales, woodland, and meadowland. Bridle paths
wind through and around the park, and fishermen sink their bait in the East Branch
of the Rahway River. In winter there is skiing, tobogganing, and sledding. In summer the curving trails attract hikers, and the grounds, with open fireplaces and fresh
spring water, draw thousands of picnickers. Here also is the water supply of the
City of Orange, crystal-clear water in a reservoir half a mile long and a quarter of
a mile wide. From WASHINGTON ROCK (544 alt.) at the head of Crest Dr. there is
an inspiring panorama of the vast metropolitan area to the east. Rocky steps and
twisting paths lead to the valley below where Hemlock Falls sputters and drops some
40 feet down a crevice. At the rustic pavilion is an inscription reading: "Tradition
places George Washington here in the summer of 1780 observing American troops
thwart British efforts to reach Morristown, and destroy his base of supplies."
At 7 miles on State 24 is the forked junction with an asphalt paved road.
