FORKED RIVER (pronounced For-ked), 57.8 miles (20 alt., 512 pop.),
was the home of Gen. John Lacey of Revolutionary War fame. On the L.
is the old FORKED RIVER HOUSE, which was the overnight stopping place
of Capt. Joshua Huddy (see above) on his trips up and down the Jersey
coast to inspect the Colonial militia. At Forked River is the RECEIVING
STATION (open 9-5) of the Bell Telephone System's ship-to-shore service.
South of Forked River the highway crosses the first of three branches
of the stream that gives the town its name. A State-maintained YACHT
BASIN is close to the road (L). Fishing and sailing parties here find boats
and skippers.
