The MARLBORO STATE HOSPITAL, 20.4 miles, a short distance L. of the
highway, is one of three State institutions for the mentally ill. Fields on
the 1,000-acre tract are worked chiefly by the patients.
MARLBORO, 21.7 miles (190 alt., 500 pop.), stands on a slight elevation, with large frame houses comfortably spaced along the highway. At
his settlement marl was first used as fertilizer, following the discovery of
its properties in 1768 by an Irish settler.
At 25.3 miles is the junction with an old dirt road (L) over which the
British army under Gen. Sir Henry Clinton retreated to Sandy Hook after
the Battle of Monmouth (see Tour 18A).
