The highway turns L. at NEW GRETNA, 83.7 miles (10 alt.), formerly
known as Bass River. Tradition is that the place was called New Gretna
Green prior to 1850 with the idea of making it a marriage center. New
Jersey laws, however, proved unfavorable to marriage mills and the name
was shortened to New Gretna.
