SWAINTON, 122.5 miles (20 alt., 312 pop.), was once known as Townsend's Inlet. Confusion resulting from the development of a nearby community of the same name caused the local postmaster, Luther Swain, to
circulate a petition for a new name.
In June, bright red roses are seen on trellises before many of the rather
severe white houses on the highway. These structures bear a strong resemblance to the prim dwellings of Connecticut and other New England
States that sent Colonists here, but the immaculate white paint and the
green lawns of the Connecticut homestead are usually missing.
