DAYTON, 7.5 miles (117 alt., 390 pop.), was named for Jonathan Dayton of Washington's staff, who was later a delegate to the Constitutional
Convention of 1787, a brigadier general in the United States Army, and
of the founders of Dayton, Ohio. The little village is an important
shipping point for potato growers. A blacksmith shop and, in season,
crowded corncribs and haystacks accent the rusticity. Many old houses are
along the road in this region. Windmills have water tanks midway in their
towers, an arrangement typical of the seacoast region.
At 11.1 miles is the junction with a concrete road.
