WINDSOR, 18.9 miles (l00 alt., 250 pop.), was named by the English
who settled here about 1714. A row of old-time frame houses (L) lines
the main street, but more conspicuous than those is the weathered brick
GENERAL STORE (L) that for more than l00 years has served the large
outlying farm district. Beyond the well-worn porch with iron posts is an
interior redolent of rural life of a century ago. One display cabinet is filled
with all kinds and colors of threads; another is stocked with spices. Both
the cabinets and the wooden counters are even older than the potbellied
stove in the center of the store.
Vineyards and nurseries thrive on the rich loam of the region, but potatoes are by far the most important crop. Prosperous farms show modern
improvements and equipment, contrasting with weathered snake fences.
