US 40, part of the transcontinental Harding Highway, runs westward
from coast marshlands, following an old Indian trail. The highway crosses
the scrub-pine and cranberry-bog belt and rises to the truck farm and dairy
country in the central section. Some of the villages and towns here are rich
in Revolutionary history. The road descends gradually to the lowlands of
the Delaware Valley, completing a bog-to-bog journey.
Atlantic City to Delaware Line, 67.8 m.
Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Line parallels the route between Atlantic City and
Malaga.
Small hotels and tourist homes in towns west of Atlantic City.
Concrete roadbed, three- and four-lane, except for a short macadam stretch. Motorists should exercise caution at the seven grade crossings on this route, several being
in the path of seashore express trains.
