UNION, 5.3 miles (100 alt., 16,472 pop.) (see Tour 10).
A recently developed residential area at 6.2 miles surrounds GALLOPING
HILL GOLF COURSE, operated by the Union County Park Commission
(greens fees $1; $2 to $3 Sat., Sun., and holidays; lower rates for county
residents). The club occupies the low, rounded peak of Galloping Hill,
so named because of the British military dispatch riders who galloped
over the road here an unusual sight for farmers who walked their horses
on the steep hill.
At 6.6 miles is (L) DRIVE-IN THEATER (adm. 35¢), accommodating 400
cars on nine concentric, semicircular parking areas. Feature pictures are
shown each night at 8:20 and 10:20, rain or shine, on a screen 55 feet
wide and 45 feet high.
At 7 miles is (R) BATTLE HILL GOLF COURSE (greens fees 50¢-75¢
$1-$1.50 Sat., Suit., and holidays) and the UNION SPEEDWAY (weekly or
bimonthly races from early May until late Oct.; adm. $1.20-$2.25).
Roadside stands along this part of the route specialize in cut flowers;
in spring and summer there are acres of pansies and mountain pinks along
the road. Honey, eggs, vegetables, and fruit are sold from the front steps
of many residences.
Trout, bass, and perch fishing is excellent in the Rahway River at 7.7 miles
(no fishing Fri. when trout supply is replenished by State Fish and Game
Commission). Along both banks of the stream for 9 miles stretches the
RAHWAY RIVER PARKWAY.
