HAINESBURG, 40.9 miles (340 alt.), was known more than a century ago as Sodom, for what specific sins the historians do not relate. It was customary, however, for traveling evangelists to confer that name on any element characterized by hardness of heart. The village apparently took turn for the better when John Haines opened its first school. The most noticeable buildings in the small community are the yellow frame struc- tures (L) of what was once a rich man's country estate. The LACKAWANNA R. BRIDGE (L) over Paulins Kill, 122 feet high, is a good example of reinforced concrete construction utilizing double arches.
