FLATBROOKVILLE, 18 miles, (40 alt., 102 pop.), hemmed on both
sides by the mountains, has a few houses built close to the road. The only
conceivable center of town is a one-story green frame building (R) that
serves as the POST OFFICE as well as the home of the postmistress.
An abandoned DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH (R), 18.4 miles, removed
from its original location in 1807, was used until 10 years ago. The neglected building is overgrown with poison ivy, its windows and doors gone.
Beside it is the former FLATBROOKVILLE SCHOOL. The earlier SITE OF
THE CHURCH (L), 19.2 miles, is hidden by low trees and underbrush. A flat
granite marker indicates the position.
At 19.5 miles the route turns L. sharply to ROSENCRANS FERRY, 19.8 m.iles
(no service in winter), established a few miles S. in 1756 by Daniel
Decker. In 1898 it was moved to the present site and taken over by the
Rosencrans family. The ferry, little more than a raft carrying a single car,
is propelled by a small gasoline motor and guided by a cable. Customers
on the Pennsylvania shore ring a bell to get service.
