The road rises sharply away from the river and then descends to
PETER'S VALLEY, 8.6 miles (520 alt.), or Bevans (pronounced Beevans).
The first postmaster gave the latter name his own to the village, but
failed to popularize it. To natives the place is known as Henfoot Corner
cause of the pattern made by four intersecting roads. The combined
(GENERAL STORE AND POST OFFICE (R), lit by kerosene lamps, has long
been a forum for neighborhood discussions. Behind the old frame building is a handsome stone and frame house, more than a century old, with
white columns two-and-one-half stories high. It is the home of the storekeeper.
The road twists through Flat Brook Valley, an extensive public hunting
and fishing ground, along the right bank of Flat Brook. Occasional farms
are spread along the foot of the mountains.
