Morsemere Dover Hackettstown (Portland, Pa.); US 46.
The route is paralleled by the Lackawanna R.R. between Paterson and Denville and between Buttzville and the Pennsylvania Line; and by the Lehigh and Hudson R.R.
between Buttzville and the Pennsylvania Line; and by the Lehigh and Hudson R.R.
between Vienna and Buttzville. Frequent service stations and tourist camps; hotels in cities and lake resorts.
US 46 is the most direct route between George Washington Bridge and
New Jersey's inland lake country. West of Troy Hills, where the low
North Jersey meadowlands end, is a mountainous region studded with
lakes that are rivaled only by the State's seacoast resorts in popularity with
summer and winter visitors. The zigzag course at the western end of the
route is lifted to heights unusual for New Jersey by rugged Schooleys
Mountain, Pohatcong Mountain, and jenny jump; at the Delaware River
is a long vista of Delaware Water Gap to the north.
US 46 is united with US 1 (see Tour 1) between George Washington
Bridge and Morsemere.
Morsemere to Pennsylvania Line, 71.3 miles
Concrete roadbed for the most part, with stretches of improved macadam.
