NewarkMontclairFranklinSussexHigh Point Park(Port Jervis,
N. Y.); State 23.
The route is paralleled by the Lackawanna R.R. between Newark and Montclair;
by the Erie R.R. between Little Falls and Pompton Plains; and by the New York,
Susquehanna and Western R.R. between Butler and Beaver Lake and between
Hamburg and Sussex.
Northwest out of Newark's industrial environs, State 23 leaves urban
pavements behind for high, rugged country. Mounting the rim of the old
glacial continent to the north, the highway traverses a district of mountains, high valleys, and small lakes where farming is made difficult by the
rocky character of the land. There are numerous summer resorts and camping grounds along the road. At the northern terminus is High Point Park,
the highest elevation in New Jersey.
Newark to High Point Park, 59.5 miles.
Frequent tourist camps; hotels in towns.
Concrete roadbed for the most part, with stretches of macadam.
