What do you get when you put an albatross around the neck of an albatross? THE McGREEVEY TEAM!!!! : U.S. SEEKING DEMOCRATS' RECORDS : Friday, August 29, 2003 : By JEFF PILLETS and CHARLES STILE : : The subpoena, delivered by the FBI on Tuesday, sought all transactions involving Chugh, who resigned from a Department of State post in June. : The subpoena asked for records of payments or commissions Chugh received as a party fund-raiser, an official said. : The subpoena also sought records of all contributions Chugh collected for Victory 2001, the joint fund-raising committee for the state Democratic party and McGreevey's gubernatorial campaign. : Bonnie Watson Coleman, the Democratic State Committee chairwoman, confirmed the subpoena, but declined to provide further information. She did say, though, that the subpoena focused on Chugh. : One official said McGreevey was forced to cancel a planned visit to the Trenton headquarters of the state committee after federal authorities called, notifying them that federal agents would be arriving later that day. : "It wouldn't look good if the governor met up with the feds,'' said a Democratic source familiar with the subpoena. : Chugh, a 49-year-old Asian Indian émigré, became the target of state and federal probes this month after The Record reported that he pressured Indian business owners in Middlesex County for political contributions. : Chugh allegedly threatened to block building permit and zoning variances of Asian-American shopkeepers in Woodbridge Township unless they made political contributions to the Democrats. : Chugh raised an estimated $1 million for McGreevey and the Democrats from 1997 to 2001. : Leading Democrats and key members of the Indian community told The Record that they had warned McGreevey that Chugh had a long, troubled history as a businessman and was using unethical fund-raising practices. : McGreevey has called the allegations "rubbish" and called his campaign the cleanest in New Jersey history. : E-mail: pillets@northjersey.com and stile@northjersey.com
