: County Democrats Tap Javier Inclán to Succeed the late Janet Haynes as
: County Clerk, Nominee Would be First Hispanic to Hold Countywide
: Office

: (Hoboken), NJ) - Hudson County Democratic Chairman Bernard F. Kenny Jr.
: announced today that Guttenberg Councilman Javier Inclán will be the party
: leadership's choice for County Clerk when County Democratic Committee
: members meet Tuesday, September 9th, to choose a successor to the late Janet
: Haynes.  If elected, Inclán, 32, would become the first Hispanic to hold
: Countywide office in Hudson.  Approximately 40 percent of the County's
: population is Hispanic.

: "After careful consultation with a wide range of party leaders, it became
: clear
: that Javier Inclán was the kind of bright, young person we needed to fill
: the
: void caused by Janet's untimely passing," said
: Chairman Kenny.  "He will bring energy and commitment to this important
: leadership post in government and help us grow stronger as a party after the
: loss of such a beloved member of our Democratic family.  I am hopeful that
: the
: membership of the County committee will share this view."

: Haynes was re-nominated in the June Democratic Primary to serve a third
: five-
: year term but passed away in July at the age of 70 after being hospitalized
: for
: treatment of complications caused by a long battle with diabetes.

: "No one will replace Janet Haynes, but I am proud and honored to be given
: this
: opportunity to succeed her," said Inclán.  "I believe that my selection as
: the first
: Hispanic to serve in Countywide office is a testament to the openness and
: diversity of today's Hudson County Democratic Organization.  I am looking
: forward to working hard every day."

: Raised in Guttenberg, Inclán graduated from North Bergen High School and
: earned a B.A. in History from William Paterson College.  His managerial
: experience includes stints as Assistant Executive Director of the West New
: York Housing Authority and Director of Admissions at Monroe College in
: New York.

: He first entered public office in 1998, when he was elected to the
: Guttenberg
: School Board.  Two years later, he was elected to the Town Council.  Inclán
: has served as a member of Governor James E. McGreevey's transition team's
: Committee on Higher Education and currently serves as Executive Director of
: the Hudson County Democratic Organization.  He is a member of the Latin
: Kiwanis Club.

: If elected, Inclán will focus on the modernization of the Clerk's office
: with an
: emphasis on exploring new technology.  "We don't have to reinvent the wheel,
: but we can make it spin a little faster," he said.

: Across Hudson County, top Democrats are praising the selection of Javier
: Inclán for County Clerk:  "Janet Haynes' passing was a terrible loss for
: Hudson
: County," said County Executive Thomas A. DeGise.  "Still people should
: be heartened by the fact that Javier Inclán will work his butt off for the
: people of
: Hudson County - and he'll make them proud, whether they are Democrats,
: Republicans or Independents."

: "Janet Haynes was a legend and pioneer as the Hudson County Clerk, always
: conducting herself with the dignity and respect the office and title
: deserve," said
: Congressman Bob Menendez (D-NJ-13).  "Although there is no candidate that
: can replace Janet, I am confident that Javier Inclán will bring a new spirit
: and
: enthusiasm to the post, guiding the office into a new era of service and
: efficiency for all of the residents of Hudson County.  Javier is intelligent
: and
: energetic, and, as the first Latino countywide candidate, he will continue
: to
: open doors and create inroads for our growing and changing communities.  I
: look forward to working with him throughout this campaign season, onto
: victory, and through an exciting term."

: If selected by the County Committee membership next Tuesday, Inclán is
: likely
: to be recommended to the State to become the interim replacement for Janet
: Haynes, whose second term does not expire until December 31, 2003.
