Hudson Democrats blast role of McGreevey attorney general in campaign finance case; accuse Harvey of buckling to political pressure By STEVE KORNACKI JERSEY CITY, September 15 - Leaders of the Hudson County Democratic Organization today laid the blame for their failed legal challenge to the results of the 31st District's June Democratic primary on a judge who they say misinterpreted state election law and an attorney general's office that they believe failed to stand up for the law because of political pressure. Rep. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken), the HCDO's highest-ranking elected official, and state Senate Majority Leader Bernard F. Kenny, Jr. (D-Hoboken), the Hudson County Democratic Chairman, headlined a press conference on the steps of the Hudson County Superior Courthouse in Jersey City this morning at which the HCDO and its 31st District candidates blasted Superior Court Judge Arthur N. D'Italia's decision last week to dismiss their election contest on the grounds that campaign contribution limits don't apply to primaries as a poor precedent and predicted their appeal would be successful. But the harshest criticism from the HCDO leaders was reserved for state Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, whose office had declared itself neutral in the case while D'Italia heard it. In so doing, Kenny and other HCDO leaders charged today, Harvey shirked his responsibility to enforce the law.
