URBAN TIMES
Volume 41, Issue 85

By Steven Glazer

Eliu Rivera formally announced on the 27th that he would run for Hudson County Freeholder for the fourth District, filling the slot on the Democratic, Ticket left by the sudden withdrawal of Freeholder Nidia Colon.

Mayor Glenn Cunningham introduced and welcomed Rivera to the ticket and praised him for coming over. Rivera and previously backed Tom DeGise who unsuccessfully ran against Cunningham in the recent mayoral contest. Rivera had also backed Congressman Robert Menendez who has recently been at odds with the Mayor and other members of the County Democratic Organization.

Rivera told reporters that he felt it imperative to maintain Latino representation on the Board of Chosen Freeholders and that he continue working just as he had been. According to Rivera, the most important thing was representing the Hispanic community for the key downtown fourth district. “It would not matter to me if it were Nidia or me, as long as we had representation of the interest of the Hispanic community,” said Rivera.

In fact, the current Board of Chosen Freeholders includes two Latinos and one Black out of nine members total. Federal Census figures show that the county reflects different demographics than the makeup of the Board. Those figures put blacks at 13.5%, Latinos at 40%, Asians at 9.4% and whites we-re not Hispanic or Latino at 35.3%, of the total 608, 975 population.
