Catrillo On Corruption and Taxes Although there are many concerns regarding Hudson County government, the
most pressing problems facing the people of Hudson County are corruption of
our public officials, and the high taxes, which result from that corruption. 1. CORRUPTION IN COUNTY GOVERNMENT Former Hudson County Executive Bob Janiszweski recently plead guilty to
a number of Federal crimes, including extortion and bribery. Former Freeholder
Nidia Davila-Colon was found guilty by a Federal Court of passing bribes
to Janiszweski in order to help secure a $2.5 million dollar no-bid contract
for Dr. Oscar Sandoval, a licensed "sex therapist." Dr. Sandoval's
contract was for "psychiatric services" to be provided to inmates
of the Hudson County jail. Ms. Davila-Colon admitted to being romantically
involved with Dr. Sandoval. Another Freeholder, William Braker, is currently awaiting trial for extortion,
again involving Dr. Sandoval. According to published reports, Freeholder
Braker is heard on an F.B.I tape recording telling Dr. Sandoval, "All
I want from you is cash and Viagra." The United States Attorney for New Jersey, Christopher Christie, has publicly
stated on several occassions that there is "corruption on every level
of Hudson County government." Tom DeGise himself has admitted that "...County government has a cloud
hanging over it...We're not finished. There are going to be some more
bad headlines." What Mr. DeGise is telling us is obvious: More County officials are going
to jail. When is enough, enough? As a former Prosecutor and Judge, Charles Catrillo will not tolerate corrupt
practices on any level of County Government. To help root out corrupt public
officials and their "enablers", Mr. Catrillo, when elected, will
create the position of "Inspector General" who shall be a former
Prosecutor or Judge, and who shall be charged with duty of reviewing all
County contracts, and all business dealings with County vendors. Anyone
who is found to be corrupt, or involved in any criminal activity, will be
turned over to the Federal authorities immediately. Charles Catrillo pledges to end corruption in Hudson County once and for all. 1. HIGH COUNTY TAXES As a result of the corruption that exists within Hudson County Government,
the cost of county government is constantly rising. Former County Executive
Janiszweski raised county taxes constantly, and now his handpicked successor,
Tom DeGise, is doing the same thing. Although DeGise promised to lower taxes, the County budget for this year
is actually $15 million dollars more than Janiszweski spent! According to the official County budget, Hudson County taxpayers paid
$189,425,102 in the fiscal year 2002 - the year before Tom DeGise became
County Executive. DeGise's first budget as County Executive raised the tax
to levy to a record $204,825,327 - an increase of $15,400,225! Charles Catrillo pledges no new taxes, and to reduce taxes wherever possible
without affecting vital County services, especially for the elderely and
education.
