Menendez to run Unopposed Bergen Record Peter Sampson JERSEY CITY -Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Union City, will not face a primary contest in the 13th District congressional race after all. Administrative Law Judge Elinor Reiner on Thursday ended the candidacy of Edgar Martinez, finding his nominating petitions did not contain a sufficient number of valid signatures from registered voters and that two circulators hadn't actually circulated the petitions. The move left the five-term congressman unopposed in the June 4 Democratic primary and virtually assured of victory in November. Martinez, the deputy police director in Jersey City, who is aligned with Mayor Glenn Cunningham, will not appeal the decision, his attorney said. Menendez, the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House and chairman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, challenged the petitions on grounds that some voters had been misled and others were ineligible because they were Republicans, not registered to vote, or didn't live in the district. |
