URBAN TIMES NEWS MARTINEZ' PETITION CHALLENGED BY MENENDEZ By Steven Glazer (Jersey City) The Hudson County Board of Elections heard a challenge to Edgar Martinez's nominating petition by Congressman Robert Menendez. Menedez' challenge is based on his assertion that the majority of Martinez' challenging those signatures he claims were either signed by people not knowing what they were signing, or signing in the belief their signature was to be used for some other purpose, according to Martinez. Martinez explained that he would need a minimum of 200 signatures, so Menedez will challenge as many as needed to reduce his petition below the minimum level. "But," said Martinez, We are going to let process take its course and I am highly confident that I will be vindicated. "If Menedez' challenge is successful, it will prevent Martinez, a Puerto Rican, from getting on the ballot for that Congressional District. Menendez is Cuban. |
