I have been saying the same thing for months, maybe not so eloquently, in another forum & was called among other things, ignorant.

We, in Jersey City & Hudson County, face problems much more pressing than how to acquire more open space.

I would really like to know where the heck you are going to find any space period in towns like Guttenberg & EastNewark. In other towns, all the open space there is has been pretty much used up & the towns that do have potential space, face massive remediation.

Finally, if you think for one minute that these funds will remain dedicated or $0.01, then I have a bridge to sell you.

: On Nov. 4, the citizens of Hudson County will be asked to vote on a new "special assessment" to their property tax bill. This "mini-tax" - County Executive Tom DeGise's phrase - would then be used as a matching fund to seek state Green Acres funds for "[thin].[thin].[thin].[thin]open space and farmland preservation."

: In other words, homeowners are being asked to pay a new special tax even though they have already paid for the acquisition of open space through their funding of Green Acres bonds. You are being asked to pay twice for the same thing. And "farmland preservation" in Hudson County needs no further comment.

: Of course, no one disagrees with the need for more open space, but why is this need so critical that it calls for a new, special tax?

: There are literally hundreds of problems facing Hudson County residents that could use extra funding. Should there be a special tax to fight the spread of the HIV virus? Should there be a special tax to combat teen pregnancy? How about a special tax to end traffic congestion, and promote cleaner air?

: The point is that there is no end to the list of problems that need more funding. This is why I oppose the new "mini-tax" favored by my opponent for County Executive Tom DeGise. Once we begin to go down the road of special assessments to address specific problems, there will be no end to the parade of special assessments. The County tax burden - already increased by 8 percent this year by Tom DeGise - is too much to bear right now.

: Therefore, I urge all voters to vote "no" on Tom DeGise's mini-tax. The taxpayers of Hudson County are already overtaxed. To ask for a new tax to address a problem that is already being funded from our present taxes is an insult to the intelligence of every homeowner in Hudson County.
