UrbanTimes News Jersey City—Carmen Mendiola, the Republican candidate for the 31st District Senate Seat also sought by Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham has publicly endorsed Cunningham. “I know Cunningham and what he stands for and I think that he will be a great Senator. We want to unite and not further divide. This about people and not about Party.” Mendiola has been a lifelong registered Republican and worked as assistant corporation counsel during the Schundler administration here. Mendiola said that her decision to throw her support behind Cunningham is in recognition of Cunningham’s long running battle with the Democratic political machine in Hudson County. Mendiola said that she is aware of the crisis and that her decision to support Cunningham is to prevent any more disservice to the people of the district who she says are the victims of machine politics and corruption. “We do not want the people to pay the price for a few bad apples.” Mendiola said that she could easily identify with Cunningham despite party differences because of his well known stand on issues like crime, and quality of life that are universal. As a woman and Hispanic, bilingual at that, Mendiola said that she found it easy to identify with Cunningham as a minority member also. “From what we saw of the negative politicking during the primary race and the HCDO efforts to overturn the the election we feel it is imperative that political affiliations be put aside in order to bring about the best good government for constituents in the 31st district.” Mendiola was born in Cuba and moved to the United States as a child. She ran unopposed for the Republican nomination in June. Mendiola resides and maintains law offices downtown in Jersey City. Deputy Mayor Carl Czyplicki said that what Mendiola is doing is highly commendable, an act of conscience transcending partisan politics. “She is clearly equal to the task with impressive credentials and experience. She is a seasoned attorney with a long back ground in local politics. She is a minority member, an Hispanic woman. But like all of us she recognizes that Glenn Cunningham has won the confidence of so many people in the 31st District. This year the primary election in the 31st District was one of the most interesting in the State. After all the court battles the results after repeated legal tests clearly indicate the will of the people. And that will is that the majority want to be represented by Glenn Cunningham. ” Jose Arango, Republican County Chairman, said of Mendiola, “She is a person that thinks for herself and I have to respect her opinion. As a woman, and a minority member she sees little difference between the position of the Democrats and Republicans on the underlying issues of most concern but instead sees this as a choice against the political machine. That is really what this is about, people against the corrupt machine with its waste and mismanagement.” “Other than that we are family oriented, fiscally and financially conservative. We believe that the elected official must be extremely responsible and accountable to tax payers and homeowners to balance the budget. We need somebody who will be effective in Trenton to bring more funding to Jersey City and Bayonne. “We want good schools for our children, whether public or private. We want to make Hudson County part of this country again, and with the rest of the country work with the two party system, not machine politics. We want to work together to bring the back decency and credibility to the county in the shadow of all these corruption scandals. We want to create balanced government as well as a balanced budget’”
