NEWARK-- The Jersey City branch of the NAACP will file legal action
against the Hudson County Democratic Organization at 11 a.m. on
Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 in federal court, at the Martin Luther King Federal
Building & Courthouse, 50 Walnut Street.
The NAACP is taking action against the HCDO because of its conduct
during the Democratic Primary Election and a recent lawsuit that the civil
rights organization felt was an attempt to disenfranchise voters in the Jersey
City portion of the 31st Legislative District, which is 85 percent African
American.
"The NAACP cannot take partisan positions *in elections, but we are
definitely committed to fighting racism," said Jersey City NAACP Branch
President Kabili Tayari. "Any attempt to suppress or take away people's
right to vote is wrong ... whether in Florida or in Hudson County."
