Obviously, though first out of the starting gate, the McCann for Freeholder campaign never got its second wind. Was the jockey too heavy? Did the horse not get enough oats? I don't know. But, look how each did in the race: In first place was the County candidate, Radames Velazquez, who got around 2,918 votes. With about 1,249 votes, former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann was second. Republican Carl Czaplicki came in third with approximately 719 votes. Out of the money was Anthony Cruz; he only got some 478 or so votes. Of course, the HCDOers are playing the Cruz collapse as a defeat for Mayor Cunningham. As Cunningham's endorsement seems to have been confined to the courtesy of a firm and friendly handshake, it seems something of a reach to try pinning this loss on Glenn. But the question remains, what caused the Cruz campaign to falter? Cruz has been around for quite a spell (in 1997, ran for theWard E Council seat on the Jerry Healy ticket). Cruz's brother sliced and diced text for the local weekly -- around 4 years back, it's true. The point being, Cruz should have had some name recognition. As a Deputy Mayor, Cruz gets to bounce around town as a high-profile (albeit local) VIP. Also, he had a crew of high-morale volunteers and at least enough money for lots of signs. Brings to mind Eliu Rivera. Eliu is a personable guy and, as the head of PACO, is in charge of all sorts of good things. Yet, either with Schundler or Cunningham, Eliu seemed unable to kindle more than a scant handful of votes. Clearly, large portions of the Jersey City Hispanic community continue to vote according to the HCDO five o'clock cards. And don't forget, Juanita Lopez got maybe 101 votes. As far as I could see, her campaign consisted of two hand-drawn and -lettered signs (one on poster-paper and the other on cardboard).
