PEOPLE FOR OPEN GOVERNMENT November 18, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: John Glasel (201) 533-0435; j.glasel@att.net ================================================================ HOBOKEN COUNCIL DELAYS VOTE HOBOKEN - A proposal to bring the City of Hoboken's communications into the 21st Century was removed from Monday night's City Council agenda after proponents objected to a sub-committee's changes in the bill. The measure would provide for all city offices, boards and agencies to communicate via e-mail and require that public information and documents be posted on its web site. The original sponsors of the bill, People for Open Government (POG), were surprised by what appeared to be an attempt to water down their "Electronic Access Ordinance" by converting it into a "resolution," which is much easier to repeal. The group was nonplussed. "Everyone on the City Council said they liked our proposal, but it came out of their subcommittee a pale shadow of its former self," said spokesman John Glasel. In addition to transforming it into a resolution, he added, "they stuck in a couple of loopholes big enough to drive a truck bomb through." As a result of POG's objections, its representatives were invited to a meeting of the Council's Technology Sub-committee to be held next week. It was hoped that differences could be resolved so that the three-step ordinance enactment process could be started at the next Council meeting, slated for December 3rd . ####
